Synchronised and scalable AV content Across NeTworks

Scope

Many homes and businesses are now able to access new multimedia services through both broadcast and other broadband networks. xDSL rollouts are in progress, cable networks are being enhanced, third generation mobile and fixed wireless broadband networks are in development and investments and trials are being carried out for putting fibre networks into the ground. At the same time digital and interactive television services are being introduced to the market. Just as broadcast and Internet services are now converging, it is expected that broadcast and other broadband services will converge. We see a multitude of user terminals, ranging from high definition TV-sets to small hand-held mobile phones, entering the market and gaining popularity.

With these developments as a basis and the knowledge that traditional DVB broadcast services can gain great benefits from enhancement with multimedia components using additional telecom networks, the SAVANT project wants to enable scalable content and services so that:

* Information can be retrieved and adjusted based on the capabilities of different user terminals.
* Information can be retrieved and presented based on the users requests.
* Information can be distributed based on the capabilities of the networks present.

This scalable approach allows the user to enhance their broadcast programs with e.g. higher resolution, associated 3D graphics elements, associated audio/video content, a wider range of heterogeneous sources and a variety of content providers, as a bought service. The "payment" can be a combination of subscription to the enhancement of the service, the purchase of a terminal with enhanced capabilities, and the connections to higher performance networks.
