Design for
Sustainability
Supervisors: Professor David Harrison, Dr. Peter Evans and Dr. Brian
Griffiths
Alex studied Engineering Product Design B.Sc. (Hons) at the University
of Westminster and Design Studies M.A. at the University of
Hertfordshire. He has worked as a professional draftsman and test
engineer in industrial storage systems, an integration and human factors
engineer for military vehicle mounted electronics, and as an interior
design consultant.
In September 2007 Alex joined the Cleaner Electronics Research Group at
Brunel University to study for a Ph.D. His research will establish the
state of the art within sustainable product design, and determine 'best
practice’ within industry. This will be achieved with a combination of a
conventional literature review and a research methods review followed by
an extensive investigation into commercial practices through visiting
manufacturers and recyclers. As part of this work, key people within
design, production and end of life product processing will be
interviewed, and industrial systems will be examined with the intention
of discovering the most environmentally beneficial concepts, methods,
product features and design management models. The conclusions developed
from the resulting information should be suitable for incorporation
within the British Standards for Manufacturing, Assembly, Disassembly
and End of life processing (MADE).
Alex's work is a natural
progression of several previous studies conducted by the Cleaner Electronics
Research Group, including active disassembly for consumer electronics,
active disassembly for end-of-life vehicles, and ecological footprint
analysis of consumer electronics.
