Nowadays industries operate in increasingly complex environments where they have to address increasing demands for highly customised, innovative yet low cost products, complex relationships with customers, suppliers and service providers, competition from low labour cost countries and fast changes in technology. In addition companies increasingly realise that they have to balance economic development with energy and environmental considerations to address climate change and to become sustainable.

These trends open up new opportunities for research. For example in what ways current manufacturing processes can become `carbon-lite’ or carbon-neutral? What new processes, equipment, tools and other technologies can be developed for enabling sustainable enterprises?

It is on these trends that LIFEPASS is unique in the London area and the UK and its establishment will raise the international profile of the School of Engineering and Design’s research in industry and academia by pursuing specific Objectives.

Through the exercise of their specialist knowledge and their business and social skills, the LIFEPASS Academic Members have a decisive impact on the Institute’s performance.
